We train and support doctors and medical professionals to provide free life-changing comprehensive cleft treatment to our beneficiaries.  We are looking for an experienced fundraising innovator to lead, plan and manage our international fundraising strategy and teams to ensure that we have the resources, processes, and structure we need to thrive and create change. This role will oversee our existing and growing international development efforts to expand sustainable funding and generate new income streams.

A key strategic priority for Smile Train is to develop sustainable fundraising programs in key markets. 

As a dynamic and evolving area of funding, the right leader will have a high comfort level with championing change and charting the path for the department as we evolve. You will thrive in an environment where you don’t need to be guided by a long-established fundraising strategy but are energized by developing a strategy and testing new approaches.

The right candidate will be a passionate and committed fundraising leader with an international outlook who is excited by the opportunity to do something untested by pulling up their sleeves to own the international fundraising strategy and to take risks to strategically grow our income across growing global markets. You will put the right processes in place and establish best practices, grow current sources of income, and charter the course to develop new funding opportunities.

Reporting directly to the Chief Development Officer, this role with guide a team of ten focused on expanding existing international efforts or reaching new audiences in key markets.

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the Chief Development Officer (CDO), build and execute the international development strategy, including initial market entry and development (for new markets) and longer-term fundraising strategy for developed markets.
  • Inspire, motivate, and challenge staff through active, ongoing mentorship and training, fostering an environment that supports new ideas and innovative approaches to giving.
  • Provide hands-on leadership to ensure that the organization has the right people, processes, and systems in place to critically monitor key KPIs;
  • Champion a data-driven approach to fundraising decisions and ensure adaptions are made to drive improved performance
  • Establish and grow fundraising operations, in various stages of maturity, while managing teams for success
  • Develop global strategies and execute plan(s) that maximize global corporate partnerships across international activities, with experience securing high-value gifts and cultivating opportunities with existing key relationships and networks in international markets
  • Work closely with the global corporate team to provide mentorship and leadership and inform the future state of the team to grow the portfolio of global corporate partnerships
  • In collaboration with market leads, develop the annual fundraising budget and track performance at the local level, and consolidate performance across all international markets.
  • In collaboration with the CDO, help develop long-term revenue projections and resource plans to deliver on the strategic fundraising goals.
  • Oversee the annual process to align the department, team, and individual work plans with strategic goals and ensure the team works in collaboration towards these goals.
  • Develop performance metrics to measure fundraising progress and monitor performance towards goals with regular reporting on the efforts and outcomes
  • Partner with the Finance team to ensure the people, processes, and systems are in place to support budgeting, financial reporting, and reconciliation.
  • Inspire innovative approaches to fundraising processes and systems based on industry trends and drive adoption of new strategies, techniques, and tactics
  • Design, enhance and/or implement processes and procedures to support each market’s development, including CRM/database tracking, moves management structure, donor acknowledgment and receipts, prospect research, donor privacy and compliance, and financial reconciliation.
  • With each market leader ensure that supporter engagement systems are in place to handle efficient gift processing, supporter care and excellent donor stewardship.
  • Localize or craft relevant fundraising propositions and cases for each market and donor segment (as needed)


Requirements

Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience leading development teams across international markets
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience in managing, developing, mentoring, and coaching a team of fundraising professionals for success.
  • Supporting the needs of staff, giving the right mix of empowerment and support to ensure everyone can play to their strengths
  • Strong understanding of data and analytics and monitoring KPIs to drive success
  • Track record of translating strategic thinking into tactics and organizational outputs
  • Experience in developing new functions, market-entry, and leading through ambiguity
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to work closely with the leadership team and across functional areas and to proactively share information across teams
  • Strong understanding of the trends in the international development space.
  • Experience with donor relationship management software, preferably Salesforce
  • Strong budget management skills.
  • Agile and innovative with the ability to move quickly, prioritize, and provide direction to your team, especially during periods of transformation.
  • Capacity to build and maintain excellent relations, especially with a distributed team, and to work effectively in a multicultural and multi-ethnic environment respecting diversity.
  • Extensive knowledge of fundraising principles, practices, and ethics across fundraising programs, operations, and channels.
  • Leading with a problem-solving approach to meet immediate needs and drive toward longer-term, sustainable solutions.
  • May also involve travel to regional offices and to select locations for fundraising activities
